The Lives we influence...

I know I have said it before, but I’m always surprised how God does a

One of our current moms Sara, has been in the program for about 1 ½ years. I’m honest when I say that she has been the hardest mom I have had to work with to date. When she first came to the program, she was not quick to warm up to any of the staff and she always seemed to be in conflict with one of the moms. She hardly let her 5 month old daughter be held by someone else or play independently. Don’t get me wrong she is a very attentive mom but in the beginning she was over protective. Often when we would give advise she would refuse and actually tell the staff that she knows best because she is her mother. It took month and months of trial and error for her to eventually come around and realize we were working in her best interest. Perhaps the most frustrating was anytime she took a step forward, you could guarantee she was going to take 2 or 3 steps back. New demands or changes would cause her to panic and shut down.

But as her daughter grew, and began to explore, she developed relationships with other moms in the house and other staff. She was free to request hugs, to be held, give kisses and to laugh. Her mother, Sara, took notice of all these things and sometimes she would sit and smile and other times she would tell the staff to

look what her daughter does.

One day in particular, I was standing in the kitchen cooking, totally caught off guard, Sara comes up behind me and gives me the biggest hug and says I love you. I turned around to hug her back. When I think of Sara, I think of all the times she was watching how we were loving on her daughter, and how her daughter was loving on us. I think of the times we gave hugs and kisses requesting nothing in return.

Isaiah 54:1-3 “Sing, O childless woman you who have never given birth! Break into loud and joyful song, O Jerusalem, you have never been in labor. For the desolate woman now has more children that the woman who lives with her husband,” says the Lord. “Enlarge your house; build an addition. Spread out your home, and spare no expense! For soon you will be bursting at the seams….
